If you want to improve the comfort of the home, insulation of the building is a more effective solution. In fact, building insulation can not only bring comfort to your life, but also save energy and reduce unnecessary energy costs.

At present, the commonly used building thermal insulation materials are glass wool and rock wool. They are all mineral based raw materials, so they are also called mineral wool. These minerals are made together with other materials through high-temperature melting, spinning and other processes. Among them, glass wool is used quartz sand or recycled glass as raw materials, rock wool is used basalt, dolomite and other raw materials. They have the following characteristics:

1. Heat preservation and insulation

Both types of mineral wool provide effective insulation. The interior of mineral wool is an open fiber structure, and there are many air and pores in the interior, which do not allow heat to pass easily, so that it has good thermal performance. This is how mineral wool provides insulation for your home.

At room temperature, the thermal conductivity of glass wool is 0.035-0.040W/(m·K), and the thermal conductivity of rock wool is 0.036-0.043W/(m·K), the lower the thermal conductivity, the better the thermal insulation performance, so the thermal insulation performance of glass wool is better than rock wool.

2, fire performance

In terms of fire safety, mineral wool is superior to other thermal insulation materials. They are both non-combustible and fireproof. According to the "Classification of Combustion Performance of Building Materials and Products", glass wool has obtained A2 certification, while rock and mineral wool has obtained A1 certification.

The fire resistance of Grade A1 is better than that of grade A2, so the fire resistance of rock wool is better than that of glass wool. With a melting point of more than 1000 ° C, it reduces heat transfer to the point where it can be used to extinguish fires, acting as a fire barrier. Therefore, rock wool insulation material is more suitable for long-term fire resistance.

3, sound insulation performance

Rockwool and glass wool can effectively suppress noise compared to hard foam board. They all have good sound insulation effect.

Because rockwool is denser than glass mineral wool, it can slow down or even capture sound waves as they pass through the structure. It provides excellent sound insulation and produces a quieter structure. Rockwool prevents noise transfer between the floor and walls, and can effectively reduce the noise outside or in the vicinity.

4. Water repellent and mildew resistant

Rock wool and glass wool are inorganic fiber materials that do not breed fungi, mold and other bacterial growth. In addition, these two kinds of insulation materials will be added to the production of hydrophobic agents. As a result, they are not affected by water vapor, and air pockets in the fibers help ensure their breathability, thereby helping to slow or stop water buildup.

5. Production cost

In fact, the production cost of glass wool is lower than that of rock wool, so the price of glass wool is relatively cheap. If your budget is limited, consider glass wool, insulation and lower energy bills are equally excellent.

6. Scope of application

Glass wool is light and soft, and is commonly used indoors, for example: under pitched roofs, floor insulation and interior wall insulation.

Rock wool is dense, relatively heavy and hard, so it will be used outdoors, such as: for hollow wall insulation, roof insulation, external wall insulation and so on.

Glass wool and rock wool are neither good nor bad, they both provide good insulation and sound insulation, and are easy to install. When you choose building thermal insulation materials, you need to choose based on your own project situation.
